What is diabetes?
If you have diabetes, your blood glucose, or blood sugar, levels are too high. Glucose comes from the foods you eat. A hormone called insulin helps the glucose get into your cells to give them energy.
With type 1 diabetes, your body does not make insulin. With type 2 diabetes, your body does not make or use insulin well. Without enough insulin, the glucose stays in your blood.
What health problems can diabetes cause?Over time, having too much glucose in your blood can cause complications, including:
- Eye disease, due to changes in fluid levels, swelling in the tissues, and damage to the blood vessels in the eyes.
- Foot problems, caused by damage to the nerves and reduced blood flow to your feet.
- Gum disease and other dental problems, because a high amount of glucose in your saliva helps harmful bacteria grow in your mouth. The bacteria combine with food to form a soft, sticky film called plaque. Plaque also comes from eating foods that contain sugars or starches. Some types of plaque cause gum disease and bad breath. Other types cause tooth decay and cavities.
- Heart disease and stroke, caused by damage to your blood vessels and the nerves that control your heart and blood vessels.
- Kidney disease, due to damage to the blood vessels in your kidneys. Many people with diabetes develop high blood pressure. That can also damage your kidneys.
- Nerve problems (diabetic neuropathy), caused by damage to the nerves and the small blood vessels that nourish your nerves with oxygen and nutrients.
- Sexual and bladder problems, caused by damage to the nerves and reduced blood flow in the genitals and bladder.
- Skin conditions, some of which are caused by changes in the small blood vessels and reduced circulation. People with diabetes are also more likely to have infections, including skin infections.
What other problems can people with diabetes have?If you have diabetes, you need to watch out for blood glucose levels that are too high (hyperglycemia) or too low for you (hypoglycemia). These can happen quickly and can become dangerous. Some of the causes include having another illness or infection and certain medicines. They can also happen if you don't get the right amount of diabetes medicines. To try to prevent these problems, make sure to take your diabetes medicines correctly, follow your diabetic diet, and check your blood glucose regularly.

What is diabetes?

What is diabetic heart disease?Diabetic heart disease is a term for heart disease in people who have diabetes. If you have diabetes, you are much more likely to develop heart disease or have a stroke than people who don't have diabetes. And you may start having these problems at a younger age.
Over time, the effects of high blood sugar from diabetes can include damage to the blood vessels and nerves in your heart. This damage increases your chance of developing heart diseases, including:
- Coronary artery disease (CAD). It happens slowly as a sticky material called plaque builds up in the arteries that supply your heart muscle with blood.
- Heart failure. With this condition, your heart can't pump enough oxygen-rich blood to meet the needs of your body.
- Cardiomyopathy. This is a group of diseases in which the heart muscle may become thick or stiff.
Who is more likely to develop diabetic heart disease?Diabetes puts you at serious risk for heart disease. It also makes you more likely to develop other conditions that raise your risk even more, including:
- High blood pressure
- High blood levels of LDL "bad" cholesterol
- High triglycerides (a type of fat in your blood) with low blood levels of HDL "good" cholesterol
Your risk for heart disease is also higher if you
- Are male
- Smoke
- Have obesity
- Have too much belly fat around your waist, even though you're at a healthy weight:
- For men, that's a waist more than 40 inches
- For women, that's a waist more than 35 inches
- Have a family history of heart disease
- Have chronic kidney disease
What are the symptoms of diabetic heart disease?In the early stages, heart disease usually doesn't have any symptoms. But if your heart disease worsens, you can have symptoms. Your symptoms will depend on the type of heart disease you have. They might include:
- Shortness of breath
- Fatigue
- Dizziness or fainting
- Arrhythmia (problem with the rate or rhythm of your heartbeat)
- Swollen feet and ankles
- Chest pain
It's important to know that people with diabetes may not feel chest pain. That's because diabetes can damage the nerves in your heart. If you have any symptoms that could be heart disease, talk with your health care provider.
How is diabetic heart disease diagnosed?To find out if you have diabetic heart disease, your provider will:
- Ask about your medical history, including your symptoms and other health conditions you may have
- Ask about your family history, to find out if you have relatives who have or had heart disease
- Do a physical exam
- Likely run some tests to help understand your personal risk for heart disease, including:
- Blood tests to check your cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood sugar levels
- A blood-pressure check
- Heart tests, if needed
Depending on your risk level, your provider may send you to a cardiologist (a doctor who specializes in heart diseases) for care. If you do have heart disease, treatment will depend on the type of heart disease you have.
How can I prevent diabetic heart disease?You may be able to prevent heart disease or keep it from getting worse by working with your provider to:
- Control your blood sugar levels
- Manage other conditions you may have that can raise your risk for heart disease
- Take any medicines your provider prescribed
- Make heart-healthy habits part of your daily life
- Follow a healthy eating plan for diabetes

Encephalitis
What is encephalitis?
Encephalitis is inflammation (swelling) of the brain. It can happen when an infection or medical condition that affects the brain activates your immune system. The inflammation can cause a wide range of symptoms. In extreme cases, it can lead to brain damage, stroke, or even death.
What causes encephalitis?There are different types of encephalitis, based on what the cause is. The two main types are infectious encephalitis and autoimmune encephalitis.
Infectious encephalitis is usually caused by a virus. In fact, viruses are the most common cause of encephalitis. Some of the different viruses that cause it include:
- Herpes viruses, including herpes simplex (HSV), the Epstein-Barr virus (which causes infectious mononucleosis) and the varicella-zoster virus (which causes chickenpox).
- Viruses you can get if you are bitten by an infected tick, such as tick-borne encephalitis (TBE virus) and Powassan virus.
- Viruses you can get if you are bitten by an infected mosquito, such as eastern equine encephalitis virus, West Nile virus, and La Crosse virus.
- Enteroviruses, which are a common group of viruses that mostly cause mild illness or respiratory infection. These infections usually happen in the summer and fall.
Bacteria, fungi, and parasites can also cause infectious encephalitis. But this is not common.
Autoimmune encephalitis happens when your immune system mistakenly attacks healthy brain cells. It can be triggered by conditions such as certain cancers, benign tumors, and infections. Sometimes the cause is not known.
Who is more likely to get encephalitis?Anyone can get encephalitis, but you are more likely to get it if you:
- Have a weakened immune system, for example from having HIV or taking certain medicines. These could include medicines taken after an organ transplant, certain chemotherapy medicines, and specialized treatments for certain autoimmune diseases.
- Are a young child or older adult.
- Live in areas where there are ticks and mosquitoes that carry viruses that can cause encephalitis.
What are the symptoms of encephalitis?The symptoms of encephalitis can vary a lot, depending on how severe it is. Many people do not have any symptoms. Others may have mild flu-like symptoms such as fever, fatigue, headache, or body aches. If encephalitis becomes more serious, it can cause:
- Severe headache
- Stiff neck
- Vomiting
- Seizures
- Behavior changes
- Drowsiness
- Muscle weakness
- Partial paralysis in your arms and legs
- Coma
Encephalitis can be dangerous in infants. Their symptoms may include:
- Fever
- Lethargy (weakness or drowsiness)
- Poor feeding
- Vomiting
- Body stiffness
- Unusual irritability or crying
- A full or bulging fontanel (the soft spot on the top of the head)
If you or your child is having symptoms of encephalitis, it's important to get medical care right away.
How is encephalitis diagnosed?To find out if you have encephalitis, your health care provider:
- Will do a physical exam
- Will take your medical history, which includes asking about your symptoms
- May do a neurologic exam
- May order imaging tests, such as a brain CT scan or MRI
- May order an EEG (electroencephalography), which use small electric sensors to measure your brain activity
- May order blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) tests
What are the treatments for encephalitis?Most people with encephalitis will need treatment in the hospital. Depending on the cause, treatments may include antiviral medicines, antibiotics, corticosteroids, and other medicines.
For some types of encephalitis, there is no medicine to treat it. But rest, nutrition, and fluids can help your body fight the infection and relieve symptoms.
Some people may need physical, speech, and occupational therapy once the illness is under control.
Can encephalitis be prevented?There are steps you can take to help prevent encephalitis that is caused by infections:
- Use good hygiene, including washing your hands often with soap and water.
- Don't share food, drinks, utensils, and glasses with other people.
- Get vaccines for viruses that can cause encephalitis.
- Avoid mosquito and tick bites, for example by:
- Wearing insect repellent with DEET or another U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellent. Make sure to follow the instructions for using the repellant.
- Wearing clothes that cover your arms, legs and feet.
- Treating your clothing and gear with products containing 0.5% permethrin before you go in grassy or woody areas.

High Blood Pressure
What is blood pressure?
Blood pressure is the force of your blood pushing against the walls of your arteries. Each time your heart beats, it pumps blood into the arteries. Your blood pressure is highest when your heart beats, pumping the blood. This is called systolic pressure. When your heart is at rest, between beats, your blood pressure falls. This is called diastolic pressure.
Your blood pressure reading uses these two numbers. Usually the systolic number comes before or above the diastolic number. For example, 120/80 means a systolic of 120 and a diastolic of 80.
How is high blood pressure diagnosed?High blood pressure usually has no symptoms. So the only way to find out if you have it is to get regular blood pressure checks from your health care provider. Your provider will use a gauge, a stethoscope or electronic sensor, and a blood pressure cuff. They will take two or more readings at separate appointments before making a diagnosis.

What are the different types of high blood pressure?There are two main types of high blood pressure:
- Primary, or essential, high blood pressure. This is the most common type of high blood pressure. For most people who get this kind of blood pressure, it develops over time as you get older.
- Secondary high blood pressure. This is caused by another medical condition or use of certain medicines. It usually gets better after you treat that condition or stop taking the medicines that are causing it.
Why do I need to worry about high blood pressure?When your blood pressure stays high over time, it causes the heart to pump harder and work overtime, possibly leading to serious health problems such as heart attack, stroke, heart failure, and kidney failure.
What are the treatments for high blood pressure?Treatments for high blood pressure include heart-healthy lifestyle changes and medicines.
You will work with your provider to come up with a treatment plan. It may include only the lifestyle changes. These changes, such as heart-healthy eating and exercise, can be very effective. But sometimes the changes do not control or lower your high blood pressure. Then you may need to take medicine. There are different types of blood pressure medicines. Some people need to take more than one type.
If your high blood pressure is caused by another medical condition or medicine, treating that condition or stopping the medicine may lower your blood pressure.

Hydrocephalus
Hydrocephalus is the buildup of too much cerebrospinal fluid in the brain. Normally, this fluid cushions your brain. When you have too much, though, it puts harmful pressure on your brain.
Hydrocephalus can be congenital, or present at birth. Causes include genetic problems and problems with how the fetus develops. An unusually large head is the main sign of congenital hydrocephalus.
Hydrocephalus can also happen after birth. This is called acquired hydrocephalus. It can occur at any age. Causes can include head injuries, strokes, infections, tumors, and bleeding in the brain. Symptoms include:
- Headache
- Vomiting and nausea
- Blurry vision
- Balance problems
- Bladder control problems
- Thinking and memory problems
Hydrocephalus can permanently damage the brain, causing problems with physical and mental development. If untreated, it is usually fatal. With treatment, many people lead normal lives with few limitations. Treatment usually involves surgery to insert a shunt. A shunt is a flexible but sturdy plastic tube. The shunt moves the cerebrospinal fluid to another area of the body where it can be absorbed. Medicine and rehabilitation therapy can also help.
